Mercedes-Benz arranges “Mercedes-Benz EQ Tech Day 2018” that Reflects Futuristic Automotive Innovation, Displaying the “EQA” Electric Concept Car for the First Time in Thailand

[Bangkok] Mercedes-Benz (Thailand) Limited underlined its number one title in electric mobility by arranging “Mercedes-Benz EQ Tech Day 2018“ that reflects futuristic automotive innovation. At the event, attendees witnessed the prospective direction of PLUG-IN HYBRID and electric cars under the brand “EQ“, as well as the “EQA“ electric concept car that was revealed for the first time in Thailand at Waldorf Astoria Hotel Bangkok.

Mr. Roland Folger, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz (Thailand) Limited, began: “As we look to the future, artificial intelligence is a key issue for us. This applies to all sectors of the business - development, production and the use of vehicles, as well as mobility services and communication. Artificial intelligence and digitalization open new opportunities for Daimler in all fields of the CASE strategy. CASE describes the four trends which are set to fundamentally alter the concept of mobility; Connected, Autonomous,Shared & Service and Electric Drive. This strategy represents a key technology on the road to a locally emission-free future for the motor vehicle.

As an automobile manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz engineers are committed to developing eco-friendly innovations for a sustainable future. The first hybrid automobile with Li-ion batteries came in 2009. The Mercedes-Benz S 400 HYBRID was a petrol luxury saloon with 7.9 L/ 100 Km fuel consumption and the best CO2 emission rate for a premium automobile at the time. In 2012, the next generation of hybrid engines was based on the 7G-TRONIC PLUS, or seven-speed automatic, transmission. Mercedes-Benz E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID was the first premium diesel automobile to go hybrid. It created a new benchmark of fuel economy for vehicles in its class at 4 L/ 100 Km. Mercedes-Benz is coming in the near future with PLUG-IN HYBRID technologies. They offer customers the benefits of two worlds: in town, they run in all-electric mode, while on long journeys they profit from the range of the combustion engine.

“Our new EQ brand goes far beyond electric vehicles. EQ stands for a comprehensive electric ecosystem of services, technologies and innovations. By 2022, Daimler will electrify the entire portfolio of Mercedes-Benz, offering customers at least one electrified alternative in all Mercedes-model series. The company is planning to offer more than 50 electrified vehicle variants – in all segments, from smart to large SUVs.”

“Today is another big step for us to unveil Mercedes-Benz Concept EQA in Thailand. It is an outstanding vehicle showcasing our plan for future compact vehicle models when they are mated with our EQ strategy. The EQA is grounded on our well-developed architecture for pure electric vehicles so it gives impressive agility and a fascinatingly long driving range—suitable for daily use.”, concluded Mr. Folger

The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQA is a charming, electric athlete as it is rooted with our Sensual Purity design philosophy, but we twist it by removing bodylines and ridges to reveal astonishing and seamless surface of the vehicle’s body and a graphically exciting pattern on a state-of-the-art rear panel in black. Its advanced laser-fibre headlight technology is beautiful and excellent upon use. In detail, laser-stimulated lighting cores are hidden in the middle of fibre optic cables and their spiral-shaped, a reminiscence of copper winding inside an electric motor, can reinforce the image of electric mobility. In addition, light flow of each headlamp also resembles electric current. In combination with the intelligent Mercedes-Benz operating strategy, the Concept EQA achieves a range of around 400 kilometres. The highly efficient lithium-ion battery with pouch cells is supplied by the Daimler subsidiary Deutsche ACCUMOTIVE. Thanks to their modular design, the innovative battery systems have a model-specific total capacity of over 60 kWh.

In Thailand, Mercedes-Benz introduces Plug-in hybrid under the named “EQ Power”. After Mercedes-Benz premiered the EQ technology brand in its new vehicles in 2016 and has continued to launch many more offerings that feature these technologies ever since.

In addition to the introduction of new models under EQ Power brand, we are focusing on production and service to strengthen the confidence of our consumers. One of our plan is the construction of battery production in Bangkok as a part of the global battery production network of Mercedes-Benz Cars for local demand and export. In total, Daimler will invest $1.18 billion (more than one billion euros) in the battery production network, which will also include production facilities in Germany, USA, and China. As in vehicle production, the battery production network will react flexibly and efficiently to market demand. This strategy ensures the ongoing availability of modern battery technology through local production hubs in Europe, China, and USA, and puts Mercedes-Benz in a highly competitive position for its electric initiative. Local production of batteries in Thailand is planned to start by 2019.”

“Another one of our strategic priorities for electric vehicle business is to build an electric ecosystem that covers every customer’s need. By building an extensive network of charging stations, we can meet the demands of customers based on their lifestyle and behavioural changes towards electric driving. The customers will, for instance, expect a greater variety of convenient charging points in addition to charging in their home garage, at Mercedes-Benz authorised dealers, shopping centres and hotels. This expansion will result in the provision of around 200 electric vehicle charging stations from Mercedes-Benz, including at 32 authorised dealers nationwide and leading hotels under Marriott International, Minor Hotels, and Hilton brand, and shopping centres, such as Siam Centre, Central World, and Paradise Park, and there will be more in the plan to follow to serve with the growing popularity of our EQ Power vehicles.
